Formed in 1992 and formally incorporated in 2012, COMETS works to promote and support quality education programs that are available to military personnel, their dependents and Department of Defense civilians stationed within the states of Arkansas, Louisiana,Oklahoma and Texas.
COMETS serves as the Advisory Council on Military Education (ACME) for the geographic region comprising Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. We work to improve the voluntary education experience for veterans, servicemembers and dependents in our region.
The Council of Military Education in The South (COMETS) covers the military service members in the States of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas; it is the organization’s mission to continue to provide progressive and innovative support for an ever-changing academic environment. VA-ACME is committed to addressing military education issues within the state of Virginia. There are three major focus areas for the state level Advisory Council on Military Education:
- Evaluating and restructuring policies related to acceptance and transfer of credit for veterans, military students, and their adult family members.
- Enhancing the educational aspirations of the military populations in the state.
- Making educational programs accessible in cost, location, and scheduling.
Just as its national arm, the Council of College and Military Educators (CCME), the VA-ACME membership is composed of military and civilian educators, post-secondary educational institutions, suppliers of education products/services, service members and veterans, and governmental organizations that support military and veteran education. The VA-ACME facilitates communication between the membership and the U.S. Department of Defense educational support network.
